Ajax is an eastern town in the Greater Toronto Area with a population of 119,677 as recorded in 2016. This town is a lakefront community with Pickering at its western border and Whitby at its eastern border. The city is characterized by a large number of single-family homes and townhomes, although condo developments are also picking up pace. Ajax has two school boards running primary and secondary schools in the city. The city also has Catholic schools. For higher education, Durham College’s Whitby campus is accessible a short drive from the town. Ajax’s major employers are in the automotive, aerospace and retail sectors. Durham Region Transit operates public transit services in Ajax. Residents have easy access to HWY 401, the busiest highway in the province, as it runs across the town. Downtown Toronto is a 45-minute drive from Ajax via HWY 401 and Don Valley Parkway. HWY 401 also connects to other major 400 series highways in the region. Ajax also has access to GO transit from the Ajaz GO station, with train service along the east and west corridors of the network. Commuters can make it to downtown Toronto’s Union Station via GO trains in just 35 minutes.
